Wow! If just reading the title made you shuffle in your seat, don’t worry you’re not alone, but keep reading.
Opinions on just about every subject are shared boldly and read, on a daily basis by millions on social media, but it is surprising how little the topic of “Faith in God” is discussed by the masses.
What is it I wonder?
Too personal?
Taboo, because we were taught that there are two things you DON’T talk about. Religion and politics? Hmmm, we seem to overcome our fear of the last one!
No $49.99 wonder pill to cure your curiosity?
Boring, there’s no fun, fame or fandom in it?
Probably some, or all of the above apply for many of us.
Strange isn’t it? Never before in time has there been more open conversation about so many things, and yet the question of “Why do I need faith in God” is largely unasked.
Undiscussed topics lead to assumptions and opinions which is tantamount to saying. “My opinion is based upon having discussed it with me, myself and I, and all three of us agree.
So let’s begin to peel a layer of the onion on this subject.
Before we do though, perhaps its is wise to look at two key words in the question. The dictionary defines them this way.
Faith: Complete trust or confidence in someone or something.
God: The creator of the universe.
If we dwell on the word faith for a moment as it relates to our lives in the world, we quickly come up with instances and associations that maybe didn’t end too well. Faith therefore for some, has a connotation of disappointment. It is easy then to see how the word faith can lend itself to a hint of cynicism.
When we look at the word god (not to be confused with God) in our daily life, it often is used like this. “ Oh my god" which is an exclamation that can express a variety of emotions, including disbelief, frustration, excitement, or anger. It's often used to emphasize how surprised, shocked, or angry someone is. For example, someone might say "OMG, you are a genius!"
In the context of a deity, creator, or supreme being, the notion of God is so intangible and ethereal that in general it gets little thought. In these contexts it is not difficult to see how mainstream and inconsequential the word has become, and so asking the question, “Do you have faith in God?", could well elicit the response, “Never thought about it!”
Not surprising
It is not surprising that individuals initiating a discussion with these specific words in the title might encounter minimal interest, or at most, participants who are somewhat hesitant. The query "Do you have faith in God" should be responded to by those of us who are unsure or only partially believe, with the statement, "I lack sufficient knowledge to form a clear opinion, but I'm curious? Make me interested"!
Here’s another truth:
There aren’t enough conversations happening with those of us who do have faith in God, and those who have questions about it.
