North and South Carolina have a winter secret that many of us might not be aware of. . . . It is NOT humid and the weather is NOT cold. If you are a full time or long term traveler like we are, then finding somewhere pleasant to "hang" during the winter is a true blessing. We began our explore of the Carolinas in February with a stay near Charleston, SC. You can join us as we captured some of the essence of this historical and charming city in the video below.

We hope you enjoyed the video and it encouraged you to put Charleston on your "bucket list". South Carolina showed us Southern hospitality, comfort food, history and flood plains (swamps). We were pleasantly surprised to learn that one such place, Congaree National Park. is a part of the NPS, National Park Service. Entry into the park was free with our "America The Beautiful" Lifetime Senior Pass.

The raised walkway kept park visitors safe from 8' deep bogs, snakes, alligators and other unpleasant "beasties". We visited at the time of year when mosquitos were still largely dormant, but come summer, this place is brutal.

Going back into history, we learned that runaway enslaved people would hide and live in the forest because few would risk their lives trying to find them in the swamp. Living conditions were hard, but it was better than enslavement. We hope you will enjoy the video of our visit, and especially our interview with forest experts.

In our next blog, we will post a great video as we travel to North Carolina and visit the area known as Outer Banks, The Outer Banks are an amazing 200-mile stretch of barrier islands off the coast and famous for storms, shipwrecks and lost pirate treasure.
